Panglao Sunrise by jfkpaint Panglao Sunrise by jfkpaint
Acrylic on masonite 16x20 View large. Reference- a photo I took last month on our visit.

100-120 hrs. Too big to scan.. photo misses a lot

Panglao is a small island off of Bohol in the central Philippines. This is my wife's home. This is Alona Beach. My wife just said "This is my Beautiful Panglao!"

Went to a bigger size this time. My ex-math skills failed me at first. doubled the size from 8x10's to 16x20. Quick "Area" calculation told me that this is 4 times the surface to "dot"... Dohhhh

I have great pride in this piece. I think it is in the top 5 or 10 of all that I have painted in the past 30 years. Hope you like it as much as I do.

lovely colours, and great pointillistic styling. She certainly lives in the most beautiful of settings!

Unfortunately we live in California and only visit her home once a year. We hope to retire there someday!

Amazing job! I love it!! The pointillism techinque of your painting reminds me of Georges Seurat.Again, great job.

I've been studying Seurat since beginning my experiments with pointillism. Just got a new book on his work.. not much to read, but a great deal to look at.

Yes,it shows you're studying Seurat, the similarities are very evident,ha,ha,ha.Seriously, you're doing a great job.And you're right, when you're learning on this case the technique of a master,I believe it is more effective to look at his work than reading a big deal of theory, and essays, etc.

You gave me a big laugh. When I have tried to read "essays" and critiques.. I wonder what the heck they were looking at. When painters get together and talk... the talk is much different then when non-painting "experts" talk.

You're right, just remember in Paris how the impresionists gathered together in a cafe and talked and exchanged ideas and opinions.Like you said it,it's not the same the opinion of an expert in art than an artist itself.See you around!

It is such a beautiful Island. I am really working hard to convey the beauty of the Philippines. My wife will never part with these pieces though. I eventually hope to have a show, once I get enough pieces done for the collection. Did you see the Cebu waterfall painting? This is from the Island that is next to my wife's island of Panglao.

Thank you Marc. I'm happy you liked the piece. It certainly is an OCD technique. I think my patience is increasing with age... hormonal???

I took a listen to a few of your tracks. Liked what I've heard so far. I'm big into the chill/lounge side of electronica. I'll visit again to determine which of the albums fits my tastes the best. Can you download your music on iTunes also or just from your site.. (I'm somewhat ignorant and I'm not sure if I download from your site if I can import them into iTunes for my devices)

All the Best

Jim

They are not available on iTunes, it's to expensive to have on that site. You can download them from Bandcamp in any format you desire. Thanks for your feedback.

I had to think about the word "Masochistic" for a day. To be honest, the technique is not really that painful as much as just time consuming. I will admit, when I put the first layer of dots with a single color, it had a good look, then I did the dark area with around 5 or 6 layers of color dots and felt I had to get the same density over the rest of the painting. That was a painful realization. Otherwise the technique is one where you can think on many other topics while doing the tedious repetitive painting. Bit of a Zen experience

Thanks Simon. I indeed like the result and the technique provides time to think about other things

indeed during some of my works i have found myself in an almost meditative state, with deeper perception and meaning to the mind:-)

For me it depends on the technique. when I paint "Normal", I find it takes a lot of concentration.. tiring. With pointillism the major thought seems to be in the color selection.. then it takes quite a while before another color has to be selected...so a lot of free mental time.

good point. it definately works for the overall outcome though! pointillism is always so eyecatching and deep (i mean the picture holds depth, depending on the dots distance from each other etc)

It is not so much "difficult" as it is a test of patience. I do worry that I am losing the technique of proper painting. I think I have to do a few pieces the normal way once again!

In some areas of the photo, the colors were washed out and the detail of the various colors used was lost. I posted a couple of detail shots that shows the technique a bit better. Every bit of the painting has 3 to 5 color layers.
